A day in Lewes
A medieval town, just 20 minutes by train
Lewes (pronounced ‘Lewis’) is a short train ride away. You can also drive, but again, parking can be tricky at busy times unless you’re prepared to park slightly out of the centre. There is plenty to do, but Lewes is also close enough for a morning or afternoon visit.
You can explore the castle, or Anne of Cleves House (given to her by Henry VIII as part of her divorce settlement). The Southover Grange gardens provide a nice spot to stop for a stroll or a picnic, or you could try one of the many coffee shops in the town.
Harveys brewery in Lewes has its own shop (by the bridge) and pub (John Harvey Tavern), where you can enjoy a local beer with a meal.
There is now also a cinema in Lewes (Lewes Depot).
